The Aurora over Lake Wyola in Shutesbury, Massachusetts
Seeing the Aurora in Massachusetts! It doesn’t seem likely, but I was fortunate to witness it over Lake Wyola on March 24th, 2023. Some friends in Maine alerted me to the potentially high activity around 9 pm. The cloud coverage was strong right then, but I saw that it had the potential to clear up around midnight. I kept myself awake until then and went to the lake just down the road. When I arrived at the water’s edge, I could see some red and green glow on the horizon. The clouds were still present but were moving fast and thinning out. I set up my camera for a time-lapse and enjoyed the show. This was the most intense part of the night (around 2 am). If you look in the water, you will see two black shapes. One was a stick, and the other was the head of a beaver who enjoyed the show with me. If you watch the time-lapse below, you can see it popping its head up a few times and swimming toward me. What an incredible night!
