After years of planning and missed chances, I finally captured the full moon setting behind Mount Washington—an alignment that happens only a few times a year and is often lost to clouds or the chaos of life. I began the overnight hike at 7 pm, pushing through six inches of fresh snow with a recent back injury and only two hours of sleep in a shelter. I reached this overlook with just minutes to spare. The wind was brutal, my hands were frozen, but the moonlit alpenglow over the Presidential Range made every step of the 12-mile trek worth it.
